The 3Rs: Relationship, Relationship, Relationship: Understanding Attachment in the Classroom
Overview
Children with disrupted attachments can present with very confusing and challenging behaviours in the classroom. By becoming familiar with attachment theory and complex trauma, educators can better understand the origin of their student’s withdrawn, impulsive or aggressive behaviours.
Most importantly, key adults directly involved with students can utilize their relationship to shift a child’s negative self-concept, and support them to feel safe and ready to learn.
Workshop Objective
The workshop will explore the links between children’s early attachment experiences, emotional development and social/ academic success in school. The Circle of Security model will be used as a “map” to understand behaviour and ways to respond to each child’s emotional needs.
This workshop will address:
- Attachment Theory and Complex Trauma as a framework to
understand the social and emotional development of young
children. - Cues and miscues: Behaviour as the communication of a
child’s inner world of thoughts and feelings. - The Circle of Security as a framework to guide educators
to support and co-regulate children who have disrupted
attachment/trauma histories. - P.A.C.E. How to be Playful, Accepting, Curious and
Empathic: Helping.
Who Should Attend
- Key adults directly involved in planning for and supporting students: this includes resource teachers, inclusion specialists, guidance counselors, teachers and educational assistants.
- Multi-disciplinary clinical support staff, including social workers, psychologists and occupational therapists.
