Understanding Attachment in the Classroom

Children with disrupted attachments can present with very confusing and challenging behaviours in the classroom. By becoming familiar with attachment theory and complex trauma, educators and education assistants can better understand the origin of their student’s withdrawn, impulsive or aggressive behaviours.
Most importantly, key adults directly involved with students can utilize their relationship to shift a child’s negative view of themselves and the world around them.
The workshop will explore the links between children’s early attachment experiences, emotional development and social/academic success in school. The Circle of Security model will be used as a ‘map’ to understand behaviour and respond to each child’s emotional needs.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS:
Monique Gougeon (MSW, RSW, CPTS, COS) and Patti Sutherland (MSW, RSW, CPTS, COS) have Masters Degrees in clinical social work. They are both Certified Child Psychotherapists and Play Therapist Supervisors with the Canadian Association of Child and Play Therapy and work together in a private therapy practice. They have extensive experience working with children and families in community agencies and schools and have received specialized training in attachment-based interventions: Circle of Security® and Theraplay®.
